TYPES OF PAN CARDS:

PAN cards are issued to different tax-paying entities. Based on that, the types of PAN are:

  1. PAN Card for Indian Individuals
  2. PAN Card for Indian Companies and Indian Firms
  3. PAN for Foreign Citizens
  4. PAN for Foreign Companies

WHO SHOULD MANDATORILY APPLY For Pan Card?

Every individual obligated to file an income tax return or engaging in specified financial transactions must possess a PAN.

Transactions in which quoting of PAN is mandatory are as follows:

  1. Sale or purchase of motor vehicles (excluding two-wheelers).
  2. Opening an account (excluding time deposits and Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account) with a banking company or cooperative bank.
  3. Opening a demat account with a depository, participant, custodian, or any SEBI regulated entity.
  4. Payment exceeding Rs. 50,000 to a Mutual Fund for unit purchase.
  5. Payment exceeding Rs. 50,000 to a company or institution for debentures or bonds acquisition.
  6. Cash deposits exceeding Rs. 50,000 in a day with a banking company or cooperative bank.
  7. A time deposit of amount exceeding Rs. 50,000 or aggregating to more than Rs. 5  lakh during a financial year with –

(i) a banking company or a co-operative bank

(ii) a Post Office;

(iii) a Nidhi referred to in section 406 of the Companies Act, 2013 or

(iv) a non-banking financial company which  hold or accept deposit from public.

  1. Payment of an amount aggregating to more than Rs. 50,000 in a financial year as life insurance premium to an insurer
  2. A contract for sale or purchase of securities (other than shares) for amount exceeding Rs. 1 lakh per transaction
  3. Sale or purchase, by any person, of shares of a company not listed in a recognised stock exchange for amount exceeding Rs. 1 lakh per transaction.
  4. Sale or purchase of any immovable property for an amount exceeding Rs. 10 lakh or valued by stamp valuation authority referred to in section 50C of the Act at an amount exceeding ten lakh rupees.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF APPLICATION?

Process for Indian Citizens:

  1. Complete Online Application (Form 49A): Fill out the PAN Card application form 49A online with accurate details.
  2. Make Payment: Pay the required fees for PAN Card processing.
  3. Receive OTP on Registered Mobile Number (Linked with Aadhaar): If your phone number is linked with Aadhaar, you will receive an OTP on the registered mobile number for authentication.
  4. The PAN card will be posted to the address mentioned on the form within a period of 21 working days from receipt of the acknowledgement.

NOTE:  Alternate Procedure for Unlinked Phone Number:

In case your phone number is not linked with Aadhaar, Follow the whole above mentioned process and then physically mail the completed application and all supporting documents to the designated department.

Process for Foreign Citizens:

  1. Complete Online Application (Form 49AA): Fill out the PAN Card application form 49AA online with accurate details.
  2. Make Payment: Pay the required fees for PAN Card processing through the online portal.
  3. Generate Acknowledgement Form: Upon completion, an acknowledgement form will be generated, which serves as proof of application.
  4. Affix Photos and Signature: Affix two  3.5*3 sized photographs and provide your signature on the generated acknowledgement form.
  5. Submit Documents at NSDL or UTIITSL Office: Submit the duly filled PAN Card Form 49AA along with copies of necessary documents at the nearest NSDL or UTIITSL office by mail.

WHAT ARE THE DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS For Applying Pan Card?

For NRI- FORM 49A:

  1. Aadhar Card (Compulsory)
  2. A copy of the Bank Account Statement in the country of residence or a copy of Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statements (not more than three months old) shall be the proof of address.
  3. PAN application (should be signed by a notary)
  4. 2 recent passport-sized photographs

Note: Foreign address – A foreign address can be provided as residential and office address by NRIs applicants, if they do not have any Indian address of their own.

For Minors: In the case of a Minor, proof of identity and address of any of the parents/guardians shall be deemed as proof of identity and address for the minor applicant.

For Foreign Citizens- Form 49AA:

  1. Copy of passport
  2. Copy of Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card/ Copy of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)
  3. Copy of Bank account statement in the country of residence/ Copy of Nonresident External (NRE) bank account statement in India, or
    Copy of Certificate of Residence in India or Residential permit issued by the State Police Authorities, or
    Copy of Registration certificate issued by the Foreigner’s Registration Office showing the Indian address, or
    Copy of Visa granted & Copy of appointment letter or contract from Indian Company & Certificate (in original) of the Indian address issued by the employer.

Note:

If the Office Address (of India) is mentioned in the application made by foreign citizens, then the following documents are mandatory as proof for the office address, in addition to any of the above residence proofs:

  • Copy of appointment letter/contract from the Indian Company
  • Certificate (in original) of the address in India of the applicant issued by the authorized signatory of the employer on the employer’s letterhead mentioning the PAN of the employer

WHAT IS THE FEE REQUIREMENT?

Please note that the fee for processing a for physical PAN card application is Rs. 107 if the communication address is within India. 

For addresses outside India, the total fees, including application fees for physical PAN card and dispatch charges, amount to Rs. 1017.
